Technical analysis basics

Technical analysis as opposed to fundamental analysis, is the study of price charts or other price indicators in order to predict which way the financial asset under consideration will follow. There are hundreds of technical indicators out there and every day many more are developed by proprietary financial firms. A broad definition could be that technical analysis is almost everything except fundamentals. The P/E ratio, or income statements analysis, or projected future earnings etc, are all part of fundamental analysis. On the contrary seasonal trends like the January effect or the bull/bear ratio are parts of technical analysis as they are not studying fundamentals. Every market participant who uses technical analysis chooses a small number of indicators from the many that exist, or even none, as technical analysis is not only indicators but also chart patterns like trends, support/resistance, double tops, etc.
